Legion BB vs Skorne BB, new player w 40k experience

I made first contact, 1 shredder on each cyclops, 2 shredders after his gladiator, which admonitioned around the first one. Carni failed charge but didn't quite block the lane from gladiator to lylyth.

He talked through possible combinations with me and a bystander, finally used one of the cyclops to kill the shredder out in front of the gladiator so it didn't have to trample, moved morghul up to catch lylyth in the feat, put abuse and rush on the gladiator, who one-shotted her on the charge attack.

It was really cool to see someone quickly grasp the possible level of interaction between models, the whole animus adding to your spell list thing seemed especially appealing to him.

Journeyman League Week 3 Game 1

Moved up to 25 points, still BBox included

Me:
pLylyth
Carnivean
4 shredders
Seraph
2 forsaken

Opp:
pMorghul
Bronzeback
Gladiator
2 Cyclops Savages
Agonizer
Min beast handlers

There was a small forest template in the middle of the board (opp placed it there), so I figured I'd abuse it. I went 2nd, moved up and hid most of my stuff behind it, threw out a sacrificial shredder.

He advanced again, put up the damage debuff from the agonizer (which had a decent range as it was full fury now).

His caster was in range through the forest, so I decided to go for it. Feated, hit him with lylths bow, put parasite on him, missed with the other shot. Carni assaulted the agonizer at an angle to hit morghul as well, left the agonizer on 1 box. Seraph rolled 3 shots, missed all of them but 1 rolling 4 dice. Left morghul with 1 box.

I survived due to running shredders to engage everything and carni being in the way, but carni frenzied next turn. After that I tried to slipstream a forsaken into range, but mis-judged the agonizer's no animus aura, so just blight bombed some beasts. Even with 4 extra dice, pow 8 doesn't necessarily do a lot against a bronzeback.

Last ditch endgame attempt to get through 2 transfers with 2 bow shots and an eruption of spines, missed one of the bow shots. Walked the seraph out of melee to try the shots, but it died to the free strikes.

Moral: risky assassinations are risky. If I had been able to outright kill the agonizer with one one of lylth's bow shots, carni's spray would have done more damage and killed morghul, but that seems unlikely. Maybe I would have been able to get a shredder on to it. I wasn't using forsaken particularly well, finding a line between being able to threaten next turn and getting killed this turn is tricky.

Me: Legion BB plus Forsaken
Opp: Cygnar BB plus Black 13th

B13 split one way around a forest, stryker and jacks around the other. I went towards the jacks, sac'd some shredders onto them. Opp killed the shredders, feated, moved stryker behind the forest. I stuck lylyth in the forest and failed to hit stryker with the bow so no parasite, left 3 for transfers just to be paranoid. I ran the carnivean through the forest into melee with stryker (out of charge range of the jacks due to the forest) put up the animus, but made my first big mistake - carni was just out of forsaken range, and had more fury than lylyth could pull.

Opponent was kind enough to hit lylyth once with the b13 so I could get rid of one of the fury on a transfer, but didn't manage to hit her again. Stryker tried to kill the carni and failed, but damaged an aspect. Carni passed his frenzy check. I made my second big mistake, namely getting so caught up in feating and trying to get parasite onto stryker that I forgot to heal the carni's damaged aspect. I was about halfway through trying to kill stryker with the carni when I realized that he should have been rolling one less die, so I just forfeited.

Me: Legion BB plus Forsaken
Opp: Trolls BB plus Fell Caller and Whelps

Sac'd some shredders onto her beasts to clump them up in midfield. Carni ended up killing all 3 on feat. Madrak had just exactly enough room to charge past the carni without getting free strike and get into melee with Lylyth. He didn't kill, leaving her on a couple boxes after transfers. Opp thought game was over, but Carnivean couldn't hit enough times to finish him thanks to scroll and surefoot, one remaining shredder couldn't either, neither could the forsaken (did blight bomb instead of melee, but rolled melee dice afterwards and would have failed that too). Madrak killed lylyth handily next turn since he still had enough boxes to cut for fury.

2 main mistakes were not visualizing what the board was going to look like after the carni wiped out all the models in the way, and not getting the shredder AND forsaken into melee to block LoS between madrak and lylyth, since he was at the edge of his reach.

Journeyman League Week 1 Game 2

Me: Legion BB
(with the 4 shredders this time)

Opp: Menoth variant battlegroup from the 2 player starter

I hid behind a forest, he sent the vanquisher into the edge of the forest, the repenter around the side, and left kreoss back behind the crusader.

I decided to just go for it, assaulted the carnivean at the crusader, was just short of melee range but sprayed and boosted at kreoss, still missed. rabidized 3 of the shredders onto the vanquisher, ate both his arms, sent the other shredder into melee with the repenter. Lylyth was exposed, but my thinking was the forest plus 3 shredders was tying down the vanquisher, and the repenter would have to either walk out of melee with the shredder, leaving him alive as a transfer target, or kill him and forgo shooting lylyth.

Unfortunately, kreoss' feat of course disengaged them both (I should have been able to position 3 shredders to totally stop non-trample movement on the vanquisher, even when knocked down). Lylyth still had 8 boxes at the end of the turn, having transferred enough to just kill the shredder, and the carnivean was in range to eat kreoss who wasn't camping any focus... but the continuous fire roll from the vanquisher's gun came up 10, just enough to kill lylth.

My big mistake was in fury handling; I should have left 2 transfer targets, not just one. It looks like you can transfer fire damage, so that would have won me the game. Also, I was reluctant to camp 2 fury and leave the carni with a possibility of frenzy, when in reality I was pretty certain to use up at least one of those fury on transfers.

Journeyman League Week 1 Game 1

Journeyman slow-grow league started up, decided to play Legion since I wanted to run a bunch of beasts and was able to borrow a battlebox.

Me: Legion BB
(was actually playing down 1 shredder cause I forgot it was supposed to be 4)

Opp: Skorne BB

Stuck a sacrificial shredder out front early, titan slammed it and followed up (rolled a 6!) to get in range of carnivean, but couldn't kill him. Parasite plus the carnivean killed the titan, sent the shredders to tie up the cyclops.

Morghul feated and killed 2 of the shredders, I backed the carnivean out of the feat, healed him and put his animus up.

My first mistake, asking "The cyclops are spd 6 and I killed the titan that could give them rush, right?" is not the same thing as "Do you have any way to buff the cyclops movement". Carnivean got slammed as a result, remaining shredder got killed.

Carni killed the cyclops that slammed him, morghul charged lylyth but failed, ending near the carni, and put his other cyclops out of control area, so it had to just walk.

My second mistake, morghul had a couple of transfers, and even with my feat I didn't think I could roll enough 11s to hit to get through them and hit him again. So I 2h threw him at the cyclops, thinking i'd do some damage, force him to waste fury standing up, heal the carni a bit and reset. But morghul has perfect balance and anatomical precision, so he and the cyclops were just able to do enough damage to kill the carni on the charge.

In retrospect, killing the cyclops through the transfers would have been a win condition too, so I should have just gone for it, would have been around ~65% chance

Battle Report 3

me: Legion battlebox
opponent: Menoth battlebox

My opponent from the last game was nice enough to let me try hordes out using his models.

After discussion of the necessity for warlocks to stay closer to beasts than warcasters do, I ran all beasts up the middle, warlock behind & flanking slightly towards forest.
Carnivean did assault with spray on his arcnode. He pointed out that his caster was actually in the spray range, so I managed to damage him.

Big dogpile in middle of board with all my lesser beasts, he went after my caster. 2 interesting things there - I was in forest, but not 3" in to block LOS, so he was able to attack; even though the forest was less than 3" wide, i would apparently have been safe had I been entirely on the other side. Secondly, I had no fury left, but he had to kill an intervening lesser beast, which gave me back just enough fury to transfer away what would have been the killing shot.

Next turn I moved some of my lesser beasts that were blocking LOS to his caster, moved up with mine + killed him at range.

moral: fury + transference is really powerful, and a little tricky.
